Holding a valid Professional and General Liability Insurance is a mandatory requirement for joining MTWPAM. We accept both Professional Liability insurance and General Liability insurance from various providers.
You are able to obtain broad Liability insurance, from the supplier of your choice, which protects you from covered losses for your practice and allows you to tailor the insurance policy to meet your needs. While there are many companies to choose from we have listed a company below with which MTWPAM has formed a working relationship over many years. We do not receive sponsorship or entitlements from this business relationship.
We understand that every individual registrant has a unique set of needs to be supported. That is why, like the Insurance providers that offer many options to suit your needs, we offer members the option to choose their Liability Insurance provider.
If you would have an existing plan, would like to purchase insurance through another company, or you are transferring from another province of Canada — and would like to keep your current insurance policy — please forward a copy of your policy so that we might review/approve your insurance.
Please Note: MTWPAM must review and approve all policies prior to purchase and application for membership, and will not be held accountable for any Insurance purchased and not approved after review.
Even if you’re not at fault, without Professional Liability insurance, you would have to pay for your own legal defense and any potential settlement costs should any patient or entity decide to make a claim against you (for many reasons detailed in your policy).
Even if you work for a company or someone else, your company’s Professional Liability coverage may not be enough to protect you in the event of a lawsuit.
Professional Liability (also known as Errors and Omission or Malpractice insurance) covers you for professional negligence of your business and general liability for bodily injury, mental injury, illness or death for which you are legally liable.
General Liability insurance provides protection for non-professional liability issues associated with serving patients. For example, patients falling and being injured during treatment. The insurance policy may also extend (check with your insurance provider) to include such coverage as business contents, theft, home and auto insurance for your business or even products such as libel/slander liability coverage.
Once approved as a Registered Massage Therapist with MTWPAM, members are eligible to apply for Direct Billing Services/Privileges with a host of healthcare benefit plan providers. Please see the Insurance FAQ for more information.
For new applicants we have two options for liability insurance that our members may find beneficial. On average, Profession Liability and General Commercial Liability Insurance for our members can range in cost from $200- $375 per year (depending on the modalities and amount of insurance coverage desired).
Both Professional Malpractice and General Liability Insurance are offered by Preventative Health Services for massage therapists and wholistic practitioners. It is the responsibility of each member to ensure that his or her qualifications satisfy the requirements of the policy application. Some modalities may see an increase of fees.
